Robert Johnson
Robert Johnson was born May 8, 1911, and died August 16, 1938. He did not know his father, but grew up with his mother. He worked in a cotton plantation, and comforted himself with singing the blues. He was married at the age of seventeen, and when his wife died he turned to music and blamed god for his wife's death.
The Legend
Robert Johnson was angry at god for the death of his wife, he made the decision to go to the crossroads and sell his soul to the devil for talent to achieve fame and fortune. Johnson went to the crossroads, which is Highways 61 and 49 crossing each other. He made a deal with the devil, his soul for talent. The devil took Johnson's guitar and played a couple of notes, tuning the guitar, then gave the guitar back to Johnson. Johnson was then given the talent he wished for. |
The picture above is one of three pictures of Robert Johnson confirmed. It is also the most recent confirmed picture. A guy was selling it on eBay thinking it was B.B. king. Someone noticed the length of the fingers on the guitar. The man on the left is Robert Johnson and the guy on the right is Johnny Shines.
The other two photos of Johnson are the two at the bottom at the bottom of the page. The picture to the left of the quote is a postage stamp sized photo of Johnson and was first published in Rolling Stone magazine in 1986. The picture to the right is a picture of Johnson taken at a studio in Memphis and was used on the cover of one of his albums. |
